Metronet Rail: Victoria Station

Client: Metronet Rail

Project: Victoria Station Temporary Ticket Office

Value: £487

Start: 2007

Completion: 2007

Scope:

This project was part of early enabling works for an asbestos removal project at Victoria Underground station prior to a major refurbishment of the main Victoria Station complex.

The scheme required a temporary ticket office to be erected on the forecourt of Victoria mainline station to allow the closure of the main subterranean LUL ticket office.

A complex process of consultation was required with the various stakeholders which included Network Rail, LUL, Metronet Rail, London Buses, Public Carriage Office and the emergency services to ensure suitable agreed access was available throughout the construction process.

The first stage required the construction of a painted timber hording around the site, this impinged on the existing taxi rank which had to be realigned with new road markings.

The temporary ticket offices comprised of four modular units, which were installed with three at ground level and one double stacked on the centre unit.

Core holes were drilled through the concrete slab to the lower level ticket office to enable routing of cables to a new service chamber adjacent to the temporary offices. Concrete foundations for the new offices were constructed and new drainage connections installed.

The location under the main entrance canopy to the Network Rail Station gave a limited clearance and required a complex lifting plan which involved a temporary night closure to parts of the bus station and adjoining roads. This lifting exercise was further complicated by the heritage status of the forecourt canopy which had to be protected from potential damage.

Following installation a customer access ramp and hand rail were installed, and the temporary hoarding removed and replaced by a permanent hording, which incorporated fire escapes and stair access to the units.
