Metronet Rail: Security Resistance LUL Shafts

Client: Metronet Rail
Scheme: Security Resistance LUL Shafts
Value: £240k
Start: July 2008
Completion: March 2009 (Anticipated)

Scope:

Following a review of vulnerable access points across the network by London Underground Ltd, a decision was taken to identify measures to improve the resilience of the network within Central London.

The review identified a number of locations where works were required to prevent individuals from gaining unauthorized access through surreptitious means.

An initial tranche of 16 sites were scoped and put out to competitive tender, with Clancy Docwra being the successful contractor.

Following award 3 of the initial sites were withdrawn from the works brief by the client, leaving 13 sites at or close by to the following locations.

  • Cannon Street Station
  • Embankment (Victoria Gardens)
  • Embankment (Victoria Embankment Gardens)
  • Mansion House Station
  • Tower Hill Station
  • Temple Gardens
  • Aldgate Bus Stand
  • Finchley Road Station
  • Victoria Station (Area 1)
  • Victoria Station (Area 2)
  • Lambeth North Station
  • Marylebone Station
  • Warren Street Station

Works varied at each location and included reinforced steel gates, new fire doors, new security fencing and new or replacement steel grills to tunnel vent shafts.

As work progressed three sites were identified to have specific issues not identified at tender stage and required new Conceptual Design Statements to be produced by Clancy Docwra. In addition some sites were located in high profile public garden areas and works were delayed until climate sensitive planting could be moved to a winter hot house.

As a result 10 sites formed Phase 1 and were completed to the original programme, with the remaining 3 sites being reprogrammed into Phase 2 to accommodate the unforeseen delays.
