Utilities Diversions for Edinburgh Tram route begins

Clancy Docwra has recently begun work on a high profile contract for TIE Limited- a company owned by the City of Edinburgh Council and charged with delivering the new Tram system. The contract, carried out by the Utilities team in Scotland and managed by General Manager Utilities, Lesley Campbell and Contracts Manager, Mark McKavanagh, will see completion of all the outstanding utility diversions on the Edinburgh Tram route, which takes in key city centre locations including Haymarket, Palmerston Place and York Place.

Edinburgh Trams Customer Services and Communications Director, Mandy Haeburn-Little, said,

“We are delighted to have Clancy Docwra join the project at this point. The initial feedback on their start has been excellent. The Clancy Docwra team have created a highly visible presence in the Capital using red fencing which means that the Trams utility work sites stand out. We have been very pleased with their readiness to begin work and in the constructive way in which have approached the project.

While the recent weather has not provided the ideal conditions for utility works, reports of their workforce voluntarily clearing the snow and ice from the pavements near their sites illustrates their commitment to the project and a clear respect for the public.”

Lesley Campbell said, “Edinburgh Trams is a high profile, technically challenging project given its city centre locations and high level of interface with the public, transport and business.”
“We are delighted to be involved in such a prestigious project and look forward to working closely with TIE to achieve their targets. At Clancy Docwra we have vast experience in the design and construction of multi utility projects throughout the UK, and are confident in the skills and abilities of our on-site teams, to deliver this project.”

Certification to CEMARS

As a responsible business we understand the impacts that we have on climate change and our obligations to reduce our carbon emissions. As a result we are delighted to announce our certification to the Achilles Limited Certified Emissions Measurement and Reduction Scheme – CEMARS.

The principles of CEMARS are based on the international standards for measuring and reporting Green House Gas (GHG) emissions. This ensures that our data collection and calculation methodologies are accurate and aligned to those standards.

Chief Operating Officer for Clancy Docwra, Seamus Keogh said, “The increasing risk of global climate change is one of the most significant threats faced by the modern world, and this is motivating all businesses to seek best practice solutions to their carbon liabilities. Government legislations are also steering organisations to put more focus to understanding how their own activities generate greenhouse gas emissions and seek opportunities to minimise them.”

“The Clancy Group has goals to be a leader in sustainability, delivered via the core company values of providing client satisfaction, integrity, standards and stability in all aspects of its services. To be able to establish a company wide carbon footprint is a useful tool and a first step to managing greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to a low carbon economy. The company was an early adopter to the Carbon Reduction programme demonstrating our commitment to the reduction of emissions. It provides a credible solution for measuring carbon emissions with methodologies aligned to the international standard ISO 14064 Part 1 and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, which helps to prepare for potential new regulations in regards to carbon management and mitigation.” Commented Governance and Compliance Manager, Ian Housley.

As a client focused company, The Clancy Group seeks to improve its own emissions and indirectly improve the carbon management of its clients. CEMARS (Certified Emissions Measurement and Reduction Scheme) is an industry recognised certification process developed for greenhouse gas reporting and accounting, and it is supported by the utility organisations.

There are 3 systematic stages to CEMARS certification: measure, manage and audit verification. The measure step focuses on producing a baseline footprint with clear quantification of emission source data, scope and boundaries. The manage step defines a company’s strategy for management and reduction of emissions with targets. When both steps have been achieved an audit is undertaken and a verification report and assurance statement produced.

This approach to carbon footprinting creates a benchmark for continuous reduction of organisational greenhouse gas emissions against a baseline year and against other companies.

For the financial period of 1st April 2008 to 31st March 2009, the total GHG emission for The Clancy Group is 20883 tonnes of CO2e, which equates to an emission intensity of 103.38 tonnes of CO2e per £1m turnover. All GHG emissions were calculated by utilising DEFRA’s 2008 guidelines for GHG conversion factors.

Ian Housley concluded, “Now that we have developed an accurate carbon footprint that complies with international best practice and identified our main emission sources, we can proactively challenge practices to improve cost savings and demonstrate sustainability leadership in an increasingly environmentally conscious marketplace.
We are aiming to deliver continual tangible benefits by tackling the core issue to our carbon emissions and seek to implement permanent change.”
