Clancy Docwra to the rescue

At 7.15am on a chilly Friday morning in February, we were called by Thames Water to carry out an emergency repair of a burst 24” water main which had flooded 12 houses. Such was the extent of the flooding that fire and rescue crews had to use a boat to help people evacuate their homes and to save their valuable belongings.

Our teams worked around the clock alongside Thames Water to quickly get the leak isolated and then repaired, work which included installing a temporary road to allow residents to be able to leave the area safely. This was agreed at 1pm and we had sourced the road and put it in place by 9pm that same night.

The incident happened on the slip road off the A34 onto Manor Road at South Hinksey. One resident had to be rescued from the top floor of her house because the force of the water was so great she couldn't open her front door, while another said that the water was 4ft (1.2m) high in parts and had lifted up the road surface in places. The Red Cross was also called in to help, and Oxfordshire County Council sent 2,000 sandbags to the area.

In a statement, Thames Water said, "We are very sorry to those affected by this incident, particularly to those whose homes have been flooded. Our engineers are beginning the repair job - first cutting off water through the main then digging up the road and replacing the broken section of pipe.” David Heycock, Group Manager at Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, added, “The water levels dropped quickly once the leak had been isolated and we were then able to focus on removing the water from the affected properties."

Let the games begin

With everything focused on the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games, it’s easy to forget that UK will also be hosting the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Which means that Glasgow is already a hive of construction activity, and has been for some time!

Since November 2010, Clancy Docwra has been working with Scottish Power on an extensive 18 month duct laying project, which is being carried out in advance of major regeneration work in the run up to the Commonwealth Games. Specifically, this work involves installing ducts for 33/132kV cables for Scottish Power at Glasgow East, where the purpose built Athlete’s Village will be located. The village will eventually house around 6,500 athletes, and after the Games will become a residential area with 1,400 homes.

This is the first UK project being carried out by Scottish Power under the management of its parent company Iberdrola of Spain, and the Iberdrola Engineering Consultancy (IEC) arm. Our element of the project is due to complete in April of this year, and until then we will continue to share temporary offices with Scottish Power.

As part of our role in this project we are also responsible for public relations in conjunction with Scottish Power, and this has involved managing communication with local stakeholders and residents by means of a letter drop, to explain more about the work in progress.

Commenting on progress to date, Clancy Docwra Operations Manager Ken Reddington said, “We have an excellent relationship with our client, Scottish Power, and I’m delighted to report that works on the ducting for the Athlete’s Village are progressing very well.”

Entertainment by the bucket load

Clancy Docwra operatives provided hours of entertainment for a toddler as they renewed water mains in Billingshurst.

Two-year-old Florry Kent was captivated by the men’s brightly coloured jackets, three tonne digger and drilling machine and spent every moment he could watching them through the window.

Chris Harmes and Matthew Speight were improving the water supply in the Silver Lane of Billingshurst, where Florry lives. They were at the site for eight weeks between July and September as they relayed 620 metres of main.

Florry’s mother Laetitia found herself watching the work for hours at a time too as the youngster refused to leave the window.

She was so impressed by the hard work and consideration shown throughout that she wrote to Southern Water to compliment the contractors.

She said: “The two men worked relentlessly, whatever the weather, and are a realcredit to your company. My son’s bedroom wall is now covered with pictures of the men working – they have made a real impression on him.

“We were always met with courtesy, a smile and kind word. I never thought I’d say it but we will miss having them around.”

Florry does have something to remember them by – Chris and Matthew presented him with a toy digger, a gift from Clancy Docwra.

Paul Attree, Assistant District Manager for Clancy Docwra, said: “I’m proud to see one of our teams being recognised for their outstanding customer focus as well as for their hard work. The “Customer Ambassador” training is obviously paying off and, who knows, we may have inspired a young man in his choice of career.”
