The Clancy Group Timeline
The company was founded in 1958 by Michael Clancy as M.J. Clancy & Sons Limited. It quickly developed a reputation as a well-run business that delivered value for money solutions and quality workmanship. The company was built on good traditional family and business values, and these values of Integrity, Stability, Standards and Client Satisfaction are still central to the business today.
Founder Michael Clancy forms M.J. Clancy & Sons Limited in Wembley – undertaking ground works, drainage and road works in and around London.
The Clancy Group introduces a new aspect of their business ‘ Clancy Developments’
M.J Clancy & Sons ltd. moves to a new premises in Wembley
Michael J Clancy’s eldest son Kevin Clancy joins the business
Michael J Clancy’s second eldest son Dermot Clancy joins the business
M.J. Clancy & Sons acquires water and gas public works contractor R.E. Docwra Limited.
Freehold premises obtained at Coppermill Lane, Harefield. The Clancy Group of Companies now operate from this address.
Michael J Clancy’s eldest daughter Mary Clancy joins the business
The company celebrates its 25th anniversary. Our Head Office is officially opened by Terry Wogan
Founder Michael J Clancy passes away suddenly. Kevin and Dermot Clancy become Joint Managing Directors of The Clancy Group Plc.
The Clancy Group becomes the first contractor in the UK to purchase microtunneling equipment
Following water privitisation, The Clancy Group wins numerous contracts for Southern Water, Thames Water, Anglian Water, Wessex Water, Mid Kent Went, Mid-Southern Water and East Surrey Water.
The Clancy Group introduces a standard uniform for the workforce, one of the very first within the construction industry.
Clancy Docwra receives its first British Safety Council Award, as well as its first ISO9000 Quality Systems Accreditation
Pipeline rehabilitation expertise is brought into the business via the acquisition of Rees Construction Services, subsequently renamed Rees Pipeline Services
Westwick Construction Ltd acquired from Wessex Water.
Rail division established. Offices established in Ealing, West London
Major contracts won in the north and Scotland for the first time for Northumbrian Water and East of Scotland Water. Regional offices established in Darlington and Alloa.
Holding company The Clancy Group Plc incorporated. All operations of M.J. Clancy & Sons, R.E. Docwra Ltd, Rees Pipeline Services and Westwick Construction are amalgamated into a single operating company, Clancy Docwra Limited
Business management system launched.
Clancy achieves ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Accreditation.
Utility Training Centre opened in Hawley Depot.
Annual turnover exceeds £100m for the first time.
First UKSTT Award received for project at Thamesmead for Tilfen Land. Subsequent awards for VMR and Pipeline schemes in East Surrey in following years.
Company achieves Investors in People status for the first time.
20 years of Clare House celebrated with a client & friends event at Harefield, followed by a family fun day on the following weekend.
Major new awards for Southern Water, Anglian Water & Thames water for AMP4 starting in 2005
Clancy Apprenticeship scheme first launched.
Launch of Multi Utility business in Scotland, office opened in East Kilbride.
Clancy Docwra becomes Transport for London Road Streetworks Contractor of the Year for works on VMR for Thames Water, followed by a further award in 2009.
Annual turnover exceeds £200m
Golden 50th anniversary celebrations for the business

The 6S Vision (2010 – 2015) is launched. 6S is Skilled, Secure, Successful, Sustainable, Strong, Systems.
The company is among the first within the UK to achieve certification within the Achilles Information Limited Certified Emissions Measurement and Reduction Scheme (CEMARS).
New Dartford offices are opened and developed.
Major milestone reached with completion of 500km of mains replacement with VMR in London for Thames Water.
The first roadmap to 6S Health & Safety is launched outlining our Strategic Initiatives and targets to 2015.
Clancy Docwra join Optimise JV to undertake AMP5 works for Thames Water.
Mobile-i, a mobile workforce management tool, is launched within the business.
Clancy Docwra is named Major Civil Engineering Contractor of the Year by the New Civil Engineer.
The company is awarded major contracts in Scotland, for Scottish Water and Scottish Power. Clancy Docwra is awarded the Anglian Water ‘Supplier of the Year’ Award.
Annual Turnover Exceeds £250m
Customer Service is at the heart of everything the company does. To demonstrate this, on September 18th the Clancy Group holds its first Customer Experience Event at its Head Offices in Harefield. The company launches its Customer Commitment document.
Clancy Docwra acheives a Bronze standard in the BITC CR Awards at first attempt.
The Clancy Group Plc launches its mandatory Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) campaign
Work Safe=Home Safe 100%.
The Clancy Group launches it’s Vision 2020 in early April, with our new internal branding!
Major new contract awards from Southern Water, Thames Water in Joint ventures with Kier, Anglian Water & UKPN, making it a record orderbook.
Think Safe programme launched for all personnel.
Multi Utility business in the south becomes a reality
Our Multi Utility South division began.
This year saw us win a large multi-utility job in the south of the UK as we continue our expansion in this exciting sector.
The contract is worth in excess of £3.2m and is on behalf of a consortium of developers comprising Linden Homes, Bloor Homes and Bovis Homes.

Our Battersea Cable Tunnel, London, UKPN Project, Phase 1, won the ‘Infrastructure Project of the Year 2018’ at the Institute for Civil Engineering.
The complex project was constructed in close proximity to rail lines and utilities, and carefully designed to complete an underground reinforced concrete junction chamber.
