The Clancy Group Timeline

The company was founded in 1958 by Michael Clancy as M.J. Clancy & Sons Limited. It quickly developed a reputation as a well-run business that delivered value for money solutions and quality workmanship. The company was built on good traditional family and business values, and these values of Integrity, Stability, Standards and Client Satisfaction are still central to the business today.

  • 1958

    Founder Michael Clancy forms M.J. Clancy & Sons Ltd in Wembley – undertaking ground works, drainage and road works in and around London

  • 1963

    Clancy Developments is formed to build residential housing

  • 1964 - Clancy
    1964

    M.J. Clancy & Sons Ltd moves to a new premises in Wembley

  • 1968

    Michael J Clancy’s eldest son Kevin Clancy joins the business

  • 1970

    Michael J Clancy’s second eldest son Dermot Clancy joins the business

  • 1973 - Clancy
    1973

    M.J. Clancy & Sons acquires water and gas public works contractor R.E. Docwra Ltd

  • 1976 - Clancy
    1976

    Freehold premises obtained for a new head office in Harefield, Middlesex

  • 1979

    Annual turnover increased from £1m to £5m over the 1970s

  • 1980

    Michael J Clancy’s eldest daughter Mary Clancy joins the business

  • 1983 - Clancy

    The company celebrates its 25th anniversary. Our head office is officially opened by Terry Wogan

    Founder Michael J Clancy passes away suddenly. Kevin and Dermot Clancy become Joint Managing Directors

    Annual turnover reaches £8m

  • 1990 - Clancy
    1990

    The first contractor in the UK to purchase microtunneling equipment

    Annual turnover reaches £25m

  • 1991

    Following water privitisation, the business wins numerous contracts for Southern Water, Thames Water, Anglian Water, Wessex Water, Mid Kent Went, Mid-Southern Water and East Surrey Water

  • 1993 - Clancy
    1993

    Standard uniform is introduced for the workforce, one of the very first within the construction industry

  • 1994

    The business receives its first British Safety Council Award, as well as its first ISO9000 Quality Systems Accreditation

     

     

  • 1995

    Pipeline rehabilitation expertise is brought into the business via the acquisition of Rees Construction Services, subsequently renamed Rees Pipeline Services

     

  • 1997

    Holding company, The Clancy Group Plc is incorporated

    Westwick Construction Ltd acquired from Wessex Water

  • 1999

    Rail division established with offices in Ealing, West London

  • 2000

    Major contracts won in the north and Scotland for the first time for Northumbrian Water and East of Scotland Water. Regional offices established in Darlington and Alloa

  • 2001 - Clancy
    2001

    All operations of M.J. Clancy & Sons Ltd, R.E. Docwra Ltd, Rees Pipeline Services and Westwick Construction are amalgamated into a single operating company, Clancy Docwra Ltd

  • 2002

    Clancy Docwra achieves ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Accreditation

    Utility Training Centre opened in Hawley Depot

    Annual turnover exceeds £100m for the first time

  • 2003

    UKSTT Award received for Tilfen Land project at Thamesmead

    Company achieves Investors in People status for the first time

     

  • 2004

    Major new awards for Southern Water, Anglian Water & Thames Water for AMP4

    Clancy Apprenticeship scheme first launched

  • 2005

    Launch of Multi Utility business in Scotland

    Clancy Docwra becomes Transport for London ‘Road Streetworks Contractor of the Year’ for its work on the Victorian Mains Replacement project for Thames Water

     

  • 2007

    Annual turnover exceeds £200m

  • 2008

    The business celebrates its 50th anniversary

    New regional offices established in Sunderland and Livingston

    ‘Customer service initiative of the year’ and ‘Partnership initiative of the year’ won for work with Southern Water

    Traffic Management division formed

  • 2009

    Kevin & Dermot Clancy become Joint Chairmen of The Clancy Group Plc with Seamus Keogh appointed as first Chief Operations Officer of Clancy Docwra

    The business is selected as Capital Delivery Partner by Scottish Water for the next 4 years

  • 2010

    Regional offices, constructed by Clancy Developments, opened in Dartford, Kent

    Victorian Mains Replacement project, involving the replacement of 500km of water mains in London, completed for Thames Water

    Clancy Docwra join Optimise JV to undertake AMP5 works for Thames Water

     

  • 2011 - Clancy

    Clancy Docwra is named Major Civil Engineering Contractor of the Year by New Civil Engineer

    The business becomes one of the first in the industry to launch a mobile workforce management tool, Mobile-i

  • 2012 - Clancy

    The company is awarded major contracts for Scottish Water and Scottish Power as well as winning the Anglian Water ‘Supplier of the Year’ award

    Annual turnover exceeds £250m

  • 2013 - Clancy

    Customer Experience Event is held at head office with the launch of the business’ Customer Commitment document

    Clancy Docwra achieves bronze in the Business in the Community awards

  • 2014 - Clancy

    The Clancy Group Plc launches its mandatory Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) campaign
    Work Safe=Home Safe 100%.

  • 2015 - Clancy

    The Clancy Group launches its strategic 5 year plan, Vision 2020

    Major new contract awards with Southern Water, Thames Water, Anglian Water & UK Power Networks, marking a record orderbook for the business

    Think Safe training programme launched for all personnel

    Annual turnover reaches £280m

    The Battersea Cable Tunnel project, delivered in London for UK Power Networks, wins the ‘Infrastructure Project of the Year’ at the Institute for Civil Engineering awards as well as the ‘New Installation – Energy and Communications’ award at the UKSTT

    The business further proves its leak detection technology, in partnership with Microsoft, by winning the ‘Best Visualisation’ award at the Northumbrian Water Innovation Festival
