Background

In 2017, UK Power Networks received a request from Ebbsfleet Development Corporation (EDC) for the provision of extra power to their new urban development area. Over the next 15 years, EDC plan to build up to 15,000 new domestic and commercial properties on the surrounding land, including a central garden area, allowing up to 30,000 people to work in a green, modern environment. This 132kV substation and associated switch house was the first major project Clancy were awarded in the SPN region.

This exciting new deal will play a key part in our work to deliver reliable and safe electricity supplies for the area. It’s good to see an organisation planning for and investing in the future needs of the Garden City

Solution

The construction of the new Grid 132kV substation has allowed the power from Northfleet East Substation to be transmitted to the new Ebbsfleet Grid substation, which is the first of three to be built as part of an overall investment in electrical infrastructure. Incoming power is fed by two 132kV circuits which are then fed through transformers and into the switchgear for distribution to the outgoing circuits.

Benefit

The new substation will provide 77MvA of power to the area, ensuring developers of commercial, residential and leisure facilities have sufficient power as the development progresses. Our exemplary high audit scores resulted in being awarded a ‘Certificate of Excellence’ from the Considerate Constructors Scheme in January 2020 and as a result of the quality delivery of this first substation, Clancy are now the preferred Alliance Delivery Member to build the next two Primary substations as part of the overall UK Power Networks scheme.
