Your route to success

Utilities Network Skills Passport

We offer three Pathways which cover the core skills and knowledge to help you enter or develop your career in utilities. The 67 hours of structured learning (typically two weeks), will be a mix of classroom and on-site training will allow you to apply for current vacancies, throughout England.

Typical roles could include:

  • Water Network Operative – Team Operative
  • Water Network Operative – Team Leader
  • Groundworker/Civils Operative
  • Meter Fitter
  • Supervisor

Pathway 1 - Introduction to the utilities sector

An introductory programme for those with little or no experience.

Some of the topics you will learn include*:
• EUSR - National water hygiene (where applicable)
• EUSR - Safety, health and environment awareness
• EUSR - Utility excavations. Category 2: Implement safe (digging) excavating practice
• EUSR - Jointing installation training
• EUSR - Electro fusion and butt fusion welding
• First aid at work
• Communication and problem solving in the workplace
• CV writing and job searching guidance

Pathway 2 – Utility Network Skills Passport (UNSP)

A programme to enhance the skills of those already working in the sector to progress their career (e.g. from a team operative to a team leader):

Some of the topics covered include*:
• EUSR - Excavation banksperson
• NRSWA – Streetworks
• Confined spaces training
• NPORS - Plant machinery – forward tipping dumper
• Other relevant courses based on skills gap analysis
• Communication and problem solving in the workplace
• CV writing and job searching guidance

Pathway 3 – Step into supervising

A programme to prepare people for a supervisory role within the sector.

• NRSWA – Streetworks supervisors
• SSSTS – Site supervisors safety training scheme
• SMSTS – Site managers safety training scheme
• Putting People to work
• Recruitment and interviewing skills for line managers
• Digital skills
• Communication and problem solving in the workplace
• Leading Others
• CV Writing and Job Searching guidance

    Unemployed

    If you are unemployed and looking to further your training,or retrain to enter into the utilities sector - you've come to the right place. Our Utilities Skills Network Passport – Skills Bootcamp is a completely free learning pathway.

    Do I need industry knowledge?
    No, if you are looking to get into the industry this is perfect for you and after dedicating time to your training, we will offer you an interview for a suitable vacancy, within six months of completing your course.

    Who funds Skills Bootcamp programmes?

    Courses are funded by Government for independent learners.

    Can I do more than one Skills Bootcamp?

    No, you can only do one Skills Bootcamp, per funding year.

    Do I need to be a UK resident, with right to work in the UK?

    Yes, you will need to have the right to work in the UK and live in England.

    Do I already need qualifications to apply?

    No previous qualifications are necessary.

    Will this training affect my Universal Credit?

    No, participants can study full time for up to 16 weeks on a Skills Bootcamp.

    I'm shortly turning 19, can I apply now?

    No, Skills Bootcamps are for individuals aged 19 and above. If you turned 19 after the 31st of August 2023, you will not be eligible and will need to wait until the 1st of September 2024 to enrol.
