Clancy awarded contract to support SGN renewal programme in Hampshire

Clancy has secured a new contract with Southern Gas Networks (SGN) to undertake gas mains and service replacement works in the south of England as the provider invests in maintaining and future proofing its network.

Over the course of the 12-month programme of works, Clancy will be designing and delivering mains and services replacement across several towns in Hampshire, including Fleet, Haslemere and Andover. The project will see Clancy replace 36km of metallic gas mains with plastic piping across to improve the network’s lifespan and durability. 

Preventing disruption to customers’ gas supply is a priority for SGN. With this in mind, Clancy aims to use, on the majority of sites, a trenchless technique of live gas mains insertion. This operation is similar to usual insertions of polyethelene pipe into an old metallic main with one important difference: by using a special gland box, the old main is kept live throughout the process and the new pipe is gassed up to maintain supply for customers.  

The prioritisation of no-dig techniques will have the added benefit of reducing carbon emissions and environmental impact, as well as minimising disruption for local communities.

The contract will involve upgrading SGN’s network to ensure safe and reliable gas supplies for years to come, and prepare for low-carbon alternatives to natural gas in the future. 

As the gas industry faces an acute skills shortage, Clancy is investing in the recruitment and training of civil engineers, with transferrable capabilities, to upskill with the specialist knowledge and qualifications needed to deliver excavation work on SGN’s sites. By increasing overall capacity, we can free up our gas experts to focus on the technical gas installations, improving our efficiency. This training is being delivered through our in-house Clancy Academy, as well as through partnering with external, gas accredited providers.
