Clancy wins appointment on large capital delivery framework to strengthen energy grid in Scotland

Energy

Clancy has secured appointment by SSEN Distribution to the company’s large capital delivery framework as it rolls out investment to strengthen and grow its network over the RIIO-ED2 price control period and into RIIO-ED3.

Clancy has been appointed to the framework regions taking in Argyll & West and Perthshire & Tayside, including key urban and rural areas from Oban to Dundee. The work will see the team design and build new substations, undertake cable replacement schemes, overhead line projects and upgrade the network’s existing assets. This builds on Clancy’s long-standing experience in energy and critical infrastructure, including SSEN Distribution’s operating region in southern England.

Worth a total £450m, the framework will run over a five-year period with the potential for three one-year extensions.

As demands on the country’s energy networks intensify, this framework represents a significant investment from SSEN to increase the resilience of the grid, reduce power cuts and improve service for customers. The projects delivered will also play an important role in expanding capacity, enabling connections to new industry and development, and encouraging wider economic growth in the region.  Alongside economic benefits, a bolstered grid will help to pave the way for the clean energy transition, preparing the network for a rise in heat pump and EV car charging needs, for example, and for greater distribution of power from renewable sources.

Martin McGovern, executive director at Clancy, said:

“SSEN’s priorities of maintaining outstanding safety standards, delivering excellent customer service and supporting growing communities match closely with our own values at Clancy. We look forward to building on the strong relationship we have with SSEN in central southern England to help the company deliver its ambitious capital investment to shore up Scotland’s grid.

“With huge demands on capacity and network resilience, we’ll be bringing to bear our track record of efficiency, innovative approaches and excellent delivery in energy and civil engineering projects to keep power running for customers and to support economic growth and the decarbonisation agenda.”

SSEN’s Director of Large Capital Delivery, Fraser Hood, says:

“The job of helping deliver net zero and its benefits for society is an enormous one, but this record investment from SSEN in the north of Scotland means we’re in the best-possible position to effectively and efficiently deliver the fit-for-purpose electricity system for the future.

“In selecting these contract partners after a fair, open, and competitive tendering process, we’ve secured the ability to deliver our massive programme of investment. This will ensure increased resilience, flexibility, and capacity for our 800,000 customers in the north of Scotland.

“At SSEN Distribution we’re committed to being at the heart of the communities we serve, and our investment of nearly £135m across Argyll and Perthshire will not only boost the reliability and resilience of our infrastructure here, this partnership with Clancy is also helping to maintain and create hundreds of skilled jobs across these communities.”
